INGREDIENTS RUNDOWN

Ingredients to Make Roasted Garlic Herb Butter

Seasoning

Garlic heads – The main ingredient of the roasted garlic butter, garlic heads are used to give the butter its characteristic flavor and aroma. If you don’t have garlic heads, you can use individual garlic cloves or use garlic powder. However, the taste (with the garlic powder) will be different and not as intense.

Fats

Vegetable oil – Vegetable oil is used to roast the garlic. It helps to soften the garlic and bring out its natural sweetness and nuttiness. The choice of oil is entirely up to you. I personally prefer using extra virgin olive oil, but you can use any oil that you like. It can be a neutral oil like canola oil or avocado oil, or even a more flavorful oil like sesame oil or truffle oil. It all depends on your preference and what you have on hand.

Dairy

Salted butter (softened)- salted butter is mixed with the roasted garlic and herbs to create the spreadable consistency of the butter. You have the option of using unsalted butter and seasoning it with salt to taste, but I highly recommend using real butter for this recipe. Not only does it add a rich and creamy flavor that is unmatched, but it also contains more nutritional value than margarine, which is highly processed. Trust me, the taste and flavor of real butter will make a big difference in the final product. So, go for the real thing, your taste buds will thank you!

Herbs

Fresh thyme and rosemary – Fresh thyme and rosemary are added to the butter to add a fresh and herbal flavor. When it comes to the herbs, I highly recommend using fresh herbs as they tend to have more flavor than dried herbs. The aroma and taste of fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme will add a delicious, fresh touch to the butter.

However, if you only have dried herbs on hand, you can definitely use those too. Dried herbs will still add flavor to the roasted garlic herb butter, just make sure to adjust the amount you use according to the recipe.

Keep in mind that dried herbs are more concentrated than fresh herbs, so you will need to use less of them. A general rule of thumb is to use 1 teaspoon of dried herbs for every 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs. So, if the recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme, you would use 1 teaspoon of dried thyme.

Get Creative with your Herbs

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your herbs, the possibilities are endless! You can even try adding different herbs to see how they change the flavor of the butter. I love to add a little bit of sage or tarragon to give the butter a different twist. You can also use dried herbs instead of fresh ones, they’ll work just as well.

HOW TO MAKE THIS ROASTED GARLIC HERB BUTTER RECIPE IN THE OVEN

  1. Alright, let’s get started on making some delicious roasted garlic herb butter! First things first, preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. Next, take your garlic heads and cut off about a third of the top, exposing the cloves.
  3. Peel off some of the outer skin.
  4. Place each head of garlic on a piece of foil, baking tray, or muffin tin.
  5. Drizzle some olive oil over the exposed cloves and wrap the foil around the heads, making sure they are sealed tight. This step is crucial because we want to make sure the garlic is both roasted and steamed at the same time, so the cloves don’t dry out.
  6. Pop them in the oven and let them roast for 30-35 minutes, or until they are soft inside and caramelized on the outside.
  7. Once they’re done, take them out of the oven and let them cool completely.
  8. While the garlic is cooling, rinse and dry your fresh herbs.
  9. Finely chop them up and set them aside.
  10. Once the garlic is cooled, press on the bottom of the heads to push out the softened cloves.
  11. In a bowl, mash the garlic together with the butter until it’s smooth and creamy. You can use a fork or a food processor for an even creamier consistency.
  12. Stir in your chopped herbs and mix everything together.
  13. Wrap the butter mixture in parchment paper, wax paper, or cling wrap and roll it into a sausage log. Twist or tie the ends to secure them.
  14. Pop it in the fridge to chill and harden until you’re ready to use it. If you prefer a softer, spreadable butter, you can also store it in a French butter dish on the countertop for a few days.

RECIPE FAQ

Substitutions

Can I use dried herbs instead of fresh herbs?

Yes, you can definitely use dried herbs instead of fresh herbs. Just make sure to adjust the amount you use accordingly, as dried herbs are more concentrated than fresh herbs. A general rule of thumb is to use 1 teaspoon of dried herbs for every 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs.

Can I use margarine instead of butter?

I don’t recommend using margarine for this roasted garlic herb butter recipe. The taste and flavor of real butter are unmatched and it contains more nutritional value than margarine. Plus, margarine is highly processed and can result in a butter that is too runny and difficult to spread. Stick with real butter for the best results.

Can I Use Ghee as a lactose-friendly option?

Yes, you can use ghee as a lactose-friendly option for this roasted garlic herb butter recipe. Ghee is a clarified butter that is commonly used in Indian cuisine. It has a higher smoke point than regular butter and is free from lactose and casein, making it a great option for those with lactose sensitivities.

Just keep in mind that ghee has a different flavor than butter and it may affect the overall taste of your butter. Ghee has a nutty and slightly caramelized flavor, which can complement some dishes but may not be suitable for others. You can always start with a small amount and adjust it to your taste.

  3. Spicy butter: Add 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the butter mixture for a spicy kick.
  4. Maple butter: Add 2 tablespoons of maple syrup to the butter mixture for a sweet and savory flavor.
  5. Parmesan butter: Add 1/4 cup of grated parmesan cheese to the butter mixture for a cheesy, nutty flavor.

GOT LEFTOVERS?

How To Store Leftover Roasted Herb Butter

Storing your leftover roasted garlic herb butter is easy, and there are a few options to choose from depending on your preference and how soon you plan to use it.

In the Fridge: One of the best ways to store leftover herb butter is in the fridge. To do this, wrap the butter in parchment paper, wax paper, or cling wrap, roll it into a sausage log, and twist or tie the ends to secure it. This will help maintain the shape and texture of the butter and prevent it from absorbing any unwanted odors or flavors from the fridge. You can store the butter in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

In a Butter Dish: Another option is to store it in a butter dish. You can use a traditional butter dish, or a butter bell, which is a French butter dish that keeps butter fresh and spreadable for up to a week without refrigeration. Simply place your compound butter in the dish and keep it covered.

In the Freezer: You can also store your leftover herb butter in the freezer. To do this, wrap the butter in parchment paper, wax paper, or cling wrap and place it in an airtight container or a plastic freezer bag. This will help protect the butter from freezer burn and allow you to store it for up to 6 months.

When you’re ready to use the butter, simply take it out of the freezer and let it thaw in the refrigerator for a few hours. Keep in mind that frozen butter may be a bit crumbly and may not have the same texture as freshly made butter.

No matter how you choose to store your leftover herb butter, the key is to keep it airtight and away from strong odors or flavors to ensure the best taste and texture.
